Surfaced operation

Surfaced routine was the name when operating the boat on
surface. Either starboard watch manned the conning tower;
executive officer, quartermaster CPO, ships no 1 (signal
man) or port watch second officer, navigation CPO and ships
no 2 (signal man).
In the conning place in the bridge fin there was a chart
table for plotting course and speed. Commands on speed and
course were given to engineer and to helmsman via voice
tube.
On topsides in bridge fin there were hatches that could be opened to
give room for signalman.
